The Least Action Principle and the Spin of Galaxies in the Local Group

چکیده

Using Peebles’ least action principle, we determine trajectories for the galaxies in the Local Group and the more massive galaxies in the Local Neighbourhood. We deduce the resulting angular momentum for the whole of the Local Group and study the tidal force acting on the Local Group and its galaxies. Although Andromeda and the Milky Way dominate the tidal force acting on each other during the present epoch, we show that there is a transition time at z ≈ 1 before which the tidal force is dominated by galaxies outside the Local Group in each case. This shows that the Local Group can not be considered as an isolated system as far as the tidal forces are concerned. We integrate the tidal torques acting on the Milky Way and Andromeda and derive their spin angular momenta, obtaining results which are comparable with observation. 1 Email: [email protected] 2 Email: [email protected]

Pulsating red giant and supergiant stars in the Local Group dwarf galaxy Andromeda I

We have conducted an optical long-term monitoring survey of the majority of dwarf galaxies in the Local Group, with the Isaac Newton Telescope (INT), to identify the long period variable (LPV) stars. LPV stars vary on timescales of months to years, and reach the largest amplitudes of their brightness variations at optical wavelengths, due to the changing temperature. They trace stellar populati...

ماده تاریک یا دینامیک دیگر؟

Allowing the energy of a gravitational field to serve partially as its own source allows gravitating bodies to exhibit stronger fields, as if they were more massive. Depending on degree of compaction of the body, the field could be one to five times larger than the Newtonian field. This is a comfortable range of increase in field strength and may prove to be of convenience in the study of vel...

Stellar Populations in the Central Galaxies of Fossil Groups

It is inferred from the symmetrical and luminous X-ray emission of fossil groups that they are mature, relaxed galaxy systems. Cosmological simulations and observations focusing on their dark halo and inter-galactic medium properties confirm their early formation. Recent photometric observations suggest that, unlike the majority of non-fossil brightest group galaxies (BGGs), the central early-t...

Using Perturbative Least Action to Reconstruct the Local Group

In this paper, we apply the Perturbative Least Action Method to model the Local Group of galaxies for various Cosmological models. We show that though the galaxy masses are theoretically good discriminators of ΩM given some observed MW and M31 separation and radial velocity, current estimates of the masses are insufficient to make any cosmological claims. We then discuss additional complication...

First-principles study on the electronic structure of Thiophenbithiol (TBT) on Au(100) surface

First principle calculations were performed using Density functional theory within the local spin density approximation (LSDA) to understand the electronic properties of Au(100)+TBT system and compare the results with Au(100) and bulk Au properties. Band structure, the total DOS and charge density for these materials are calculated. We found that the HOMO for Au(100)+TBT becomes broader than Au...
